Over time, we can become a little bored or fed up with the design and decor throughout our homes, and sometimes this calls for a bit of a redesign. However, if you’re lacking inspiration, or don’t know what you could do to liven the place up and add a bit more character, having a feature wall could be the perfect solution. It is often viewed as being quite luxurious and high quality, making your home appear even more desirable and attractive. They provide great opportunity, and you can basically decorate and make your feature wall anything you want it to be.
We thought we’d explain why having a feature wall is a great addition to your home, and why this may be something you want to consider.
A feature wall is basically a wall that stands out. It is designed differently to the rest, and is much bolder and more eye catching. It creates a focal point in the room, or if you perhaps already have a focal point in the room, choose the wall situated at this point to transform into a feature wall and give the area a little makeover.
There is no set price for creating a feature wall; you can essentially create your own budget and use your own imagination and creativity. They don’t necessarily have to cost a lot of money, it’s about what you can do with the money you are happy to spend. For example, you may only want something subtle, with minor changes and a simple design, or on the other hand, you might want to go big and bold and create something very loud and striking.
As we mentioned, there is no set formula on how to design a feature wall, it is completely down to you. Although feature walls are designed to stand out and act as a focal point, we still advise choosing a design or colour scheme suited to the rest of the room, so that it doesn’t look out of place, yet still stands out – it’s about finding the perfect balance.
Finding inspiration to design a feature wall can be difficult, but it’s all about being creative. It could be as simple as painting the wall a different colour to the rest, something brighter and bolder such as red, that perhaps matches accessories or furniture within the room. This works particularly well if your room is quite neutral, as it brightens the place up and adds a bit of character. This could also be done in a similar sense by creating a patterned wall. Patterned wallpaper in an otherwise plain room is a great way to draw attention and create a focal point.
Another way to decorate your feature wall and make it personalised to you, is to hang things like ornaments and pictures, that make it quite unique and special. This can create quite a homely atmosphere if you decorate it with personal items and things that are significant to you. It also means that when you have guests and their attention is drawn to this area, you can explain the meaning behind some of the things on the wall.
